Winter Adaptations
What do animals do in the winter?
The answer is not as simple as you might think. First graders learned concepts including hibernation, migration, torpor and brumation with Emily Groth, an educator with the Center for Environmental Education at Putnam Northern Westchester BOCES.
The students learned about animals' amazing ability to adapt and survive in cold weather. One of the best parts of the visit was that Groth brought the shells and furs of many of the animals they discussed for the students to touch.
