KLSD Reopens 2020 Update August 10

Summer Update August 10, 2020

Dear KLSD Community,

As I wrote on Friday, Governor Cuomo has cleared schools to open in September, so long as transmission rates remain low and so long as our reopening plans are approved.

When we open, in order to follow required social distancing guidelines, we must divide our students into two cohorts. To know which students we are placing into these A/B cohorts, we are asking all families to complete this linked form no later than Sunday, August 16th.

The form asks if you intend to keep your child(ren) home full-time. The number who answer yes to this question will help us know the extent to which we can provide educational resources for those children who stay home full-time.

We will assign all students to a model consistent with family preference for the months of September and October. We will ask families to recommit to their selections and/or make new selections at a later date for November and December.

Our schedule this fall will be as follows:

Monday

Tuesday

Wednesday

Thursday

Friday

Cohort A in school

All students learn remotely

Cohort B in school

Cohort B at home

Cohort A at home

Students in kindergarten and first grade, along with some special education students and some English language learners, will attend school in-person on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday.

To give you an opportunity to ask questions about our reopening plans, we are holding three community-wide Zoom meetings this week. To attend, simply click on the date below at the appropriate time.

Wednesday August 12 at 7:00 pm

Thursday, August 13 at 9:30 am

Thursday, August 13 at 7:00 pm

These sessions will be recorded and posted on our website for those who cannot join us live. You can submit questions in advance to questions@klschools.org. Questions submitted in advance are most likely to be answered during the meeting. You will also be able to submit questions during the meetings, but we can’t be sure we’ll have time to answer all of them.

If you have not already, I encourage you to visit our Frequently Asked Questions page, where many questions have already been addressed. On this page, you will find an important distinction between homeschooling and accessing KLSD resources remotely.

As always, be safe and be well,

Andrew Selesnick, Superintendent of Schools
