John Jay places second overall in the Lower Hudson Valley Regional Science Olympiad competition

 John Jay took second place in the Science Olympiad's Lower Hudson Region competition and will advance to the State Competition on March 10 and 11 at  LeMoyne College in Syracuse.

Six schools in total will represent the Region at the State competition; joining John Jay at States will be Ardsley, who finished first, Scarsdale, Byram Hills, Tappan Zee, and Fox Lane.

Two Science Olympiad teams from John Jay High School competed in the Regionals against forty-four other teams from twenty-seven high schools. The competition consisted of twenty-three academic, building, and laboratory events. 

Congratulations to the following students who earned medals in their events:

  • 2nd place in Herpetology: Serena Chen and Ellie Randles
  • 2nd place in Hydrogeology: Akshay Amin and Justin Chang

  • 3rd place in Dynamic Planet: Katie Ricca
  • 3rd place in Electric Vehicle: Samuel Chen and Dee Ann Guo
  • 3rd place in Helicopters: David Sorkin and Matthew Sorkin
  • 3rd place in Wind Power: Athena Ohnemus and Dee Ann Guo
  • 4th place in Astronomy: Nick Aoki and Dee Ann Guo
  • 5th place in Dynamic Planet: Evelyn Mullaney and Elyse Sherr
  • 6th place in Fermi Questions: James Lucassen and Jordan Schwartz
  • 7th place in Invasive Species: Elyse Sherr and Amanda Huang
  • 7th place in Write It Do It: Amanda Huang and Angela Huang
  • 8th place in Helicopters: Dee Ann Guo and Amanda Huang
  • 8th place in Material Sciences: James Lucassen and Jordan Schwartz
  • 8th place in Rocks and Minerals: Evelyn Mullaney and Angela Huang
  • 9th place in Herpetology: Molly Siegel and Jordan Sandell
  • 10th place in Chemistry Lab: Nick Aoki and Zoe Shaw
  • 10th place in Hovercraft: James Lucassen and Jordan Schwartz

 John Jay High School Science Olympiad teams are coached by teachers Dr. Linda Burke, Mrs. Amy Shimberg, Mr. Matthew Funnell, Mr. Steven Zoeller, Mrs. Emilia Camporese, Mrs. Micki Green, Mrs. Caroline Weldon, Mrs. Ann Marie Lipinsky, Ms. Anna Treiller, Mrs. Jennifer McLean and parent Mr. Victor Aoki.

New York State Science Olympiad (NYSSO) is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of science education in grades 6-12, increasing male, female and minority interest in science, creating a technologically literate workforce and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science and technology.

NYSSO also promotes the inclusion of Science Olympiad activities in classroom curricula and provides teacher training at seminars and an annual coaches workshop.
