Dear KLSD Families,
It was my intention to send a reminder today about next week’s Learning Café - When the News Enters Our Classrooms. I would be remiss if I did not mention Sunday night’s horrific shooting in Las Vegas. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and their friends.
Please know that our principals and our clinical staff were in communication early yesterday about how best to ensure the well-being of our students. At yesterday afternoon’s faculty meetings, staff were reminded to keep an eye out for any student who might be struggling in light of the news. And I take this moment to remind our parents that if you think your children might be impacted by the news, our clinical staff are available in school to answer your questions.
On October 11th, at 7 pm in the John Jay Middle School dining room, we host our Learning Café. We invite parents and community members to join us and wrestle with questions of when the world’s news should enter our schools, when we should work to keep that news at bay, and when, as noted above, the news should cause us to watch our students that much more closely for signs they may be impacted and in need of support.
If you do plan to join us on the 11th, we ask you to RSVP here so that we can plan accordingly:
I hope to see you soon,
Superintendent of Schools
